With the Polaris under my belt, I decided to tackle something a bit more difficult. Armed with new knowledge, hard lessons, and newfound confidence, the next ship on my bench is OcCre’s Golden Hind. At 1/85 scale, the Golden Hind is the historical representation of Sir Francis Drake’s flagship, completing the first English circumnavigation of the globe between 1577 and 1580.
I chose the Golden Hind for a few reasons. Firstly the obvious uptick in difficulty, as the instruction manual for this ship was very lacking in comparison to the Polaris. Also, I wanted to build something old and rustic.
My goals during this build are threefold:
- Build the deck using individual planks. The instructions in this kit show the deck planking is comprised of long strips. I want a more realistic look, opting to chop up different lengths instead.
- Try proper planking. I want to try my hand at “realistic” planking, using techniques found in guides across different forums and sites.
- Realistic rigging. The knots and rigging style that I used in the Polaris was basic in comparison to some of the more realistic techniques used in more complex kits.
